LearnToCompose has been designed to introduce the process of large-group composition or ‘classroom workshopping’
LearnToCompose is also available as a simplified 6-lesson project in Primary Pathway and is ideal for teaching years 3-5.
LearnToCompose aims to explore the initial stages of group composition or classroom workshopping, using a collection of teaching and learning styles that involve the teacher facilitating group music-making experiences in a variety of ways to encourage creative music-making and provide students with a variety of music-learning contexts that are as authentic as possible.
With step-by-step guidance the resource aims to guide teachers and their students through the compositional process, collaborating, sharing and exploring as a whole class towards a group composition.
This project is divided into 7 sections. Each section builds on the one preceding it.
Start with some basic rhythm skills with students learning 3 different riffs – based on Libertango by Astor Piazzolla (Model Music Curriculum – Musical Traditions) – before adding a melody and developing the composition further.
