2 New Projects Added to Primary Pathway

6 February 2025

Primary Pathway is a collection of curriculum projects featured on Musical Futures Online for teaching in a primary setting, and we’re delighted to add 2 brand new projects!

LearnToCompose

Divided into 6 lessons, LearnToCompose for the Primary Pathway has been carefully structured to support the early stages of group composition, encouraging creative music-making and hands-on activities. It develops key skills—performing, listening, composing, and improvising—by:

  • Using percussion and melodic instruments to follow patterns
  • Composing and performing with simple notation
  • Reading scores and collaborating via video playalongs

The whole process begins with breaking down the musical examples into simple rhythmic and melodic riffs before using these as the basis for pupils own creative compositions. Blending practical music-making with basic theory, this resource seeks to build confidence and skills and is ideal for upper primary aged pupils.

  • Performing as an ensemble using classroom percussion instruments
  • Learning basic notation like crotchets and quavers
