ChairDrumming

Guidance for Teachers

About this resource

What Is Chair Drumming?

Designed to build foundational instrumental and musical skills in younger pupils through participation in whole class music-making, ChairDrumming  was originally included in JustPlay, our popular whole class band programme

ChairDrumming is great for developing rhythm, pulse and co-ordination, leading to the transferring of these skills to a drum kit.  It’s also lots of fun too and has been used widely in schools with pupils of all ages, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic

Many of the principles of the Musical Futures pedagogy can be identified within ChairDrumming also, in particular:

  • Students learn music aurally – adding basic drum beats to music
  • Allows students to develop their skills using with music that they recognise, like and engage with
  • There is the potential to integrate performing, composing, listening and improvising
